How to activate an app on a smart TV

Smart TV platforms differ a little, but the activation step is the same across Samsung, LG, VIZIO and the Google TV, Roku and Fire TV systems built into many other brands. Work out which platform your TV runs, install the app, then link it to your account with the code on screen.

Independent guide - not affiliated with or endorsed by Samsung, LG, VIZIO, Sony, Hisense, TCL, Google, Roku or Amazon. Last updated 16 October 2026.

Step 1: find out which platform your TV runs

The brand on the front of the TV does not always tell you which app store it uses. Many brands build in a platform from another company. The start-up screen or the Settings menu usually names it.

Some brands use different platforms in different countries or model years, so check your own TV rather than going by brand alone.

Step 2: install and sign in

  1. Install the app from your TV's app store: Apps in Samsung Smart Hub, Apps (LG Content Store on older models) on LG, Apps on VIZIO Home, Google Play on Google TV and Android TV, or the Roku or Fire TV store.
  2. Open the app and choose Sign in, then the "on the web" or "another device" option. A code and web address appear, often with a QR code.
  3. On your phone or computer, open the address or scan the QR code, sign in to your streaming account and enter the code.
  4. The TV activates automatically within a few seconds.

Every brand's remote has a different keyboard, so the code route, where you type on your phone, is usually faster and less error-prone than typing a password on the TV. See how to enter an activation code for the details of each screen, or sign in with a QR code to skip typing altogether.

Apps from your cable or satellite package

TV network apps often ask you to sign in with your TV provider rather than a streaming account. The code step is the same, but you log in with your cable, satellite or live TV service account. Our guide to signing in with your TV provider explains how it works.

If it does not work

  • The app is not in your TV's store: it may not support your model, region or software version. Update the TV software, or use a plug-in streaming device.
  • The code is rejected: get a fresh code and check you are signed in to the right account on your phone. Our activation code not working checklist covers the rest.
  • No code appears: see where to find the activation code.
  • A website asks for a fee or a phone call: close it. Activation is free; see activation code scams.

For problems with the TV itself, use the official support site of your TV maker; for account or billing issues, use the streaming service's own help pages.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for Samsung and LG TVs?

Yes. The app stores differ (Apps in Samsung Smart Hub, Apps or LG Content Store on LG), but the code-based sign-in is the same once the app is installed.

How do I know which platform my smart TV runs?

Look at the start-up screen or the About section of the TV settings. Samsung, LG and VIZIO use their own platforms, while many other brands use Google TV, Android TV, Roku TV or Fire TV.

Is there a fee to activate apps on a smart TV?

No. Linking an app with a code is free. If the service is paid, you pay for the subscription in your own account on the service's website.

What if the app is not available on my TV?

Update the TV software first. If it is still missing, cast from your phone if the TV supports it, or use a plug-in streaming device that offers the app.
