How to activate an app on Amazon Fire TV / Fire Stick

Fire TV and Fire Stick use the standard activation flow once an app is installed: the app shows a code, and you confirm it on your phone or computer. Here is how to install the app, find the code and fix it when activation stalls.

Independent guide - not affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon. Last updated 15 October 2026.

Step 1: install the app

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, go to Find and choose Search, or open the Appstore.
  2. Type the app name, select it, and choose Get or Download.
  3. When it finishes, choose Open, or find the app in your Apps row.

Step 2: sign in with the activation code

  1. Open the app and pick Sign in. If you are given a choice, select the option to sign in on another device, on the web, or to "register" the device. A code and a web address appear, and some apps add a QR code.
  2. On your phone or computer, open the web address or scan the QR code, and check that the page belongs to the streaming service.
  3. Sign in to your streaming account on that page.
  4. Type the code and confirm. The Fire TV moves ahead automatically.
No code showing? Choose the "sign in on another device" option rather than the email and password box. If the app only offers a password box, you can sign in directly on the Fire TV. For the general process see how to enter a code.

Signing in with a QR code on Fire TV

When a Fire TV app shows a QR code, you can point your phone camera at it instead of typing the web address. It opens the same activation page, sometimes with the code already filled in. Our guide to signing in on your TV with a QR code explains how to scan on iPhone and Android and what to do if the scan fails.

If Fire TV activation does not work

  • Request a new code. Leave the sign-in screen and open it again so a fresh code appears.
  • Check the account on your phone. The Fire TV is linked to whichever streaming account is signed in there.
  • Restart the Fire TV. Use the restart option in the Fire TV Settings menu (under My Fire TV on most models), or unplug the device briefly.
  • Clear the app's cache or reinstall it. In Settings, open Applications, then Manage Installed Applications, select the app, and clear its cache. If that does not help, uninstall and reinstall it.
  • Check your network. Hotel, school and office Wi-Fi can block the hand-off between the devices.

Is there a Fire TV activation fee?

No separate fee is involved in linking an app with a code. If a streaming service charges a subscription, you pay for it in your own account with that service. Pages that ask for an "activation fee", a gift card, a phone call or remote access to your computer are not part of the real process. Frequently asked questions

My Fire TV app will not show a code. What do I do?

Pick the "register", "sign in on another device" or "sign in on the web" option inside the app. If only a password box appears, you can sign in directly on the Fire TV instead.

Is a Fire TV activation code free?

Yes. Entering the code costs nothing. Any subscription is paid inside your own account with the streaming service, never as an activation fee.

Why is my Fire TV activation code not working?

The code may have expired, been mistyped, or been entered while signed in to the wrong account. Get a new code, check your account and try again. Restarting the Fire TV often helps too.

Can I sign in on Fire TV with a QR code?

If the app shows a QR code, scan it with your phone camera, check the page belongs to the service, sign in and confirm.
