How to activate an app on Android TV / Google TV

Android TV and Google TV install apps from Google Play, then use the usual code flow to sign in. You open the app on the TV, it shows a code, and you confirm it on your phone or computer. Here are the steps and the fixes.

Independent guide - not affiliated with or endorsed by Google. Last updated 15 October 2026.

Step 1: install the app

  1. On Google TV, go to the Apps tab or use Search, find the app and select Install.
  2. On Android TV, open the Google Play Store app on the TV, search for the app and select Install.
  3. You can also install from the Google Play website on a computer while signed in to the same Google account, and choose your TV as the device to install on.

Step 2: sign in with the activation code

  1. Open the app and choose Sign in, then the option to use your phone or computer. A code, a web address and often a QR code appear.
  2. On your phone or computer, open the web address or scan the QR code, and check that the page belongs to the streaming service.
  3. Sign in to your streaming account and enter the code.
  4. The TV continues automatically within a few seconds.
Prefer scanning? On most Android phones the camera app reads QR codes, and Google Lens works if it does not. See our guide to signing in on your TV with a QR code.

Typing on Google TV with your phone

If an app only offers an email and password box, you do not have to type with the remote. Google's phone apps include a remote with a keyboard for Google TV and Android TV devices on the same network, so you can type a long password on your phone. Google describes the current options on its Google TV Help site.

If activation does not work

  • Get a new code. Back out of the sign-in screen and open it again.
  • Check the account on your phone. The TV joins whichever streaming account is signed in there.
  • Clear the app's cache. In the TV's Settings, open Apps, select the app, and clear its cache. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall it.
  • Check that the app is enabled. If an app is missing or greyed out, look for it in the full apps list in Settings (including system apps) and enable it.
  • Restart the TV from the System section of Settings, or unplug it briefly.

Our activation code not working checklist covers more causes. For device problems, use Google TV Help or Android TV Help; if your TV is from another brand with Google TV built in, the TV maker's own support site can also help.

Activation is free

Linking an app with a code costs nothing extra. If a page asks for an activation fee, a phone call or remote access to your computer, it is not part of the real process. See how to spot activation code scams.
